Managing Shopify with AI means giving an assistant such as Claude or ChatGPT scoped access to your store's Admin API through a connector, so you change products, prices, stock, orders, pages and theme code by describing the change instead of clicking through the admin. Claude CMS does this in one click, on any Shopify plan, from £6.99 a month.

In short: you keep Shopify exactly as it is. A private app on your store gives the assistant the permissions you choose, the Shopify connector relays each request, and you work in plain English. Catalogue clean-ups that took an afternoon take a conversation. Landing pages, size guides and seasonal banners stop waiting on a developer slot.
What can AI actually do in Shopify?
With the connector in place, an assistant can read and write almost everything the Shopify admin can, limited only by the permissions you tick when the app is installed. The useful work falls into four groups.
- Products and inventory. Create and edit products and variants, change prices in bulk, build collections, tidy tags and vendors, and adjust stock across locations. "Put every product tagged 'summer' into a Summer Sale collection and take 20% off."
- Orders. Look up orders, check fulfilment status, pull a sales summary for the week, and answer "how are we doing?" without opening a dashboard. "Which orders from the last three days are still unfulfilled, and what is in them?"
- Content and SEO. Write and rewrite product descriptions, blog posts and pages, and set titles and meta descriptions across the catalogue. "Rewrite the 40 shortest product descriptions in our brand voice and set a meta description for each."
- Design. This is the part most people miss. The connector edits theme templates, sections, snippets and CSS, creates new pages, builds landing pages, changes navigation menus and uploads images to your store's files. "Add a size-guide section under the add-to-cart button on the product template, matching the theme's typography."
Underneath the friendly tools sit two general ones, GraphQL and REST, which reach the full Admin API surface. If Shopify can do it and the scope is on, the assistant can do it.
How does the connection work?
Shopify never lets a third party plug straight into a store. Access always goes through an app, so the connector works the way Shopify intends.
- One private app per store. We create a custom-distribution app that is permanently locked to your store. Nothing is shared between customers.
- You approve the install. The store owner clicks an install link, sees the exact permissions requested, and accepts. That takes about a minute.
- The token stays on our side. The access token is stored encrypted on Claude CMS and relayed to Shopify at request time. It is never written into your theme, your pages or your files.
- The assistant talks MCP. Claude or ChatGPT connects to the connector over the Model Context Protocol, sees a named set of tools for your store, and calls them as you ask.
- Removing access is instant. Uninstall the app in your Shopify admin and every tool stops working at once. You can also disconnect from your Claude CMS account.
Nothing is installed in your theme. Your checkout, payments and customer accounts are untouched. If you stop using it, your store is exactly as it was.
Claude or ChatGPT: which should you use?
Both work, and the store tools are identical in each. The connector speaks an open standard, so the choice comes down to the assistant you already pay for and prefer.
- Claude. Add the connector under Settings and Connectors, sign in once, and the store tools appear in every new chat. Claude is strong at long, careful edits: theme code, structured rewrites across many products, and multi-step jobs where it checks its own work.
- ChatGPT. ChatGPT Plus or higher is needed. Turn on Developer mode under Settings, Apps and Advanced settings, create an app with the connection URL and OAuth sign-in, and enable it from the plus menu in a new chat. The whole thing takes about a minute and the steps are in the Help Centre.
- Both at once. One Claude CMS account serves both. Some owners draft copy in ChatGPT and have Claude apply theme changes. The store does not care which assistant made the call.
Whichever you pick, start every working session in a new chat, so the assistant loads the current tool list and the latest state of your store.
What does a session look like?
A typical Monday morning on a mid-sized store, run entirely from a chat window, looks like this.
- "Give me a sales summary for last week against the week before, by collection." The assistant pulls orders and totals them. No report to export.
- "List products with fewer than five units at the main warehouse." Nine products come back. "Set them to 'low stock' in the tag field and tell me which ones have a supplier note."
- "Write a landing page for the autumn range using the existing collection images, in the style of our homepage, and add it to the main menu under Shop." The page is created, linked and live in a few minutes. You read it, ask for two changes, done.
- "Our bestseller's description still mentions free UK delivery. Find every product that says that and change it to the new threshold." The assistant searches, lists the matches, and only edits when you say go.
The pattern is always the same: ask, review what comes back, confirm. The assistant does the clicking; you keep the judgement.
Is it safe to let AI touch your store?
Yes, if you keep three habits that take no extra effort.
- Choose the scopes deliberately. The permissions you tick at install decide what the assistant can reach. Products and content only is a sensible first month. Customer data can be left out entirely, and usually should be.
- Ask for a list before a change. "Show me which products match" costs nothing and turns every bulk edit into a reviewed edit. Good prompts end with "and wait for my go".
- Duplicate the theme before design work. Theme edits are live edits. Ask the assistant to work on a duplicate, preview it, then publish when you are happy. Shopify keeps the old theme for rollback.
Every call goes through Shopify's own API with your app's permissions, so the admin's app activity log shows what happened and when. The connector adds nothing that Shopify cannot see.
How do you set it up?
- Start a Claude CMS account. Pick a plan on the pricing page; the connection is set up for you on every plan.
- Choose Shopify on the setup form. It takes a minute and tells us which store to prepare.
- Request the connection. In your account, open Connections, filter by Stores, and request your store. We prepare its private app, usually the same day.
- Approve the install. The store owner opens the link we send and accepts the permissions. Your account shows the store as connected straight away.
- Connect your assistant. Add the connector in Claude, or create the app in ChatGPT, and sign in with your account.
- Open a new chat and ask for your products. If the list comes back, you are live.

What does it cost?
The Shopify connector is included in every Claude CMS plan. Monthly is £6.99 a month, rolling, cancel with 30 days' notice. Setup + Monthly is £9.99 a month with the first month free, and adds hands-on help with your first jobs. Pricing is shown in pounds, dollars or euros depending on where you are.
For comparison, a single catalogue clean-up from a freelancer typically costs more than a year of the connector, and the connector is still there for the next job. You also need an assistant subscription: Claude's paid plans, or ChatGPT Plus or higher, which most store owners already have.
Running on another platform instead? The same account connects WordPress, WooCommerce, Wix and Zoho too.
Your first 30 days with an AI-run store
- Week 1, read only. Install with read scopes. Ask for a catalogue audit: missing descriptions, missing images, products without a collection, thin meta descriptions. Keep the list.
- Week 2, the catalogue. Add write access for products. Work through the audit list in batches of twenty, reviewing each batch before the next.
- Week 3, content and design. Duplicate the theme. Build one landing page and one template improvement you have been putting off. Publish when it looks right.
- Week 4, operations. Set a Monday routine: sales summary, low-stock list, unfulfilled orders over three days. Ten minutes in a chat replaces three dashboards.
By the end of the month you will know which jobs you want the assistant to own and which you prefer to keep by hand. Most owners settle on content, catalogue and reporting first, and design once they trust the duplicate-theme habit.
Frequently asked questions
Does it work on Shopify Basic?
Yes. The connector works on every Shopify plan, from Basic to Plus. The private app is created in Shopify's Dev Dashboard, which every plan has access to.
Can the assistant see my customers' data?
Only if you tick the customer scopes at install. Most stores leave them off, which keeps the assistant to products, orders, content and theme. You can change scopes later by reinstalling the app.
Will it change my live theme?
Theme edits are live unless you ask the assistant to work on a duplicate. We recommend duplicating before design work, previewing, and publishing when you are happy. Shopify keeps the previous theme for rollback.
Can it fulfil orders or issue refunds?
Order tools cover lookups, fulfilment status and summaries by default. Writes to orders are possible when the order scopes are on and go through Shopify's own API, so the usual Shopify rules and records apply.
Do I need both Claude and ChatGPT?
No. Either one works, and the store tools are the same in each. If you use both, one Claude CMS account connects to both.
How do I disconnect?
Uninstall the app in your Shopify admin and access ends immediately. You can also remove the connection from your Claude CMS account. Your store is left exactly as it was.
Why this matters
Store owners have spent years buying apps that each do one job and add one more dashboard. An assistant with scoped access to the Admin API does the opposite: fewer screens, plain requests, and a record of what changed. The stores that learn to work this way in 2026 will run leaner than the ones still clicking through the admin, and they will ship content and design changes while competitors wait for a developer slot.
The Shopify connector from Claude CMS is available now, and most stores are connected the same day they ask.
